I know quite a few cops in my area just outside of L.A., and the majority of them have a built in "safety zone" of MPH over the limit where they'll let most people slide--guy I talked with 2 weeks ago said anything over 50mph in a 35mph limit zone and you're toast. I realize 50mph isn't exactly flying, either, but maybe that'll give you a general rule of thumb to use in the future.
