Hi guys,
Diana here, my husband just did an oil change on my F and noticed that the water pump is failing, my warranty is up this friday the 23rd, im taking it to the dealer tomorrow, is there anything else you guys can think of that might go out after my warranty is up? its a 2008, with roughly 45k miles on it, i want to take care of as much as i can before the warranty is up.

thanks! :)

Pull off the transmission skid plate and inspect the transmission pan, as it is covered you can not see the transmission pan. I just discovered a leaking sensor, that made it look like the pan gasket failed, but it was actually a sensor at the top of the transmission.

This was fixed under warranty, but note the part is $50.00 (new sensor) and the labor is 3 to 5 hours, as half of the transmission needs to be disassembled. it also requires a new transmission pan gasket as well........ as the primary and secondary valve bodies are removed during the repair.

I would strongly consider an extended warranty if you plan to keep the car for a while. They are a great piece of mind and are transferable adding to the value if you sell privately. Some also can be cancelled at some point for a pro rated refund if you trade it in.

One or two trips to the shop could pay for the warranty itself.

The car is very reliable but you just never know .........
thank you

Thanks guys, my husband put it up on blocks and my tranny pan is good, my husbands friend that works on high end cars said these cars are bullet proof, so im feeling better! :) i appreciate the advice from you both!

does the water pump make a noise when it is going?
Not usually - it leaks pink coolant around your pulleys and you are constantly filling the coolant up. Its not really the failure of the pump, its a bad seal that causes coolant to leak out.

Look inside your engine in this area - you will probably need a flash light. If it has been happening for a while look for a build up of pink coolant here. There should be no coolant at all.

Coolant tends to leak out of the air hole

OP:If the water pump or any other part of the cooling system is seriously failing, the coolant temperature will climb up to the redzone. Has it done that?

If it is, safely pull the car to the should or better yet off the freeway and off the road. Shut off the engine and call a tow truck. Cooling system failure can damage the engine.
leaking water pump seal is common with this engine. many on CL have had theirs replaced and there is a new part number for the replacement pump so it is a redesign.

The water pump would be covered under the powertrain warranty that is 70,000 miles or 72 months: http://www.lexus.com/models/LS/warranty/index.html

Is there a TSB on this?

What years are affected?

Thank you.
No..... there is not a TSB.

I believe it applied to most 2008 - 2009 before the part was revised with a design change in 2010.

In the service manual there is simply a provision to inspect and replace if a leaking condition is found

"Visually check the air hole and drain hole for coolant leakage.
If leakage is found, replace the water pump"

There is no recall, or even a technical data sheet other than what the service manual lists above.

Thank You.
good info guys, I might have to peak in there and see how mine is doing after 55k

Oh thanks a lot for the info. Make sure when you buy something expensive always consider an extended warranty period for value for money. There are some that gets cancelled and some get refunded. The choice is all yours.
