Turbo vs Super Charge

In your Opinion overall what is better? Not just IS-F sake but in general that is?
Don't quote me on this b/c I'm not a super expert but I heard that SC is not reliable over Turbo charging? True or False? Or Pending..

A turbo system is great, but it does not perform well once it get's hot. That is where a supercharger outweights in performance. There are people that swear by turbos, and others that swear on supercharges. It really just depends on the type of use you will be putting the vehicle thru.
Turbo is more power with no parasitic loss, but you have the heat issue. Turbo uses the exhaust gasses which build heat rapidly, so an intercooler is needed to help cooling. The supercharger doesn't have heat issues like turbo(because it uses the intake not exhaust) so is generally more reliable for the long haul, but it will use the engine pulley system, and saps power(parasitic loss), before spooling up.

My take: Turbo=bigger power, but less reliability.
Supercharger=more reliability, but less power.
For this car, it's probably better to use a supercharger. We'll get instant response over some lag for any good size turbo. I've owned a bunch of turbo cars and there's a lot more hardware and parts to worry about. Can't wait to see how much the TRD supercharger kit puts out for our F!

Now I can see why auto companies: Mercedes,Ford,Chevy all use Superchargers....makes sense
Just to confuse you, why Porsche uses turbo and not supercharge then? ;-)

honestly i believe the turbo is a lot nicer isn't it a lot cleaner as well, the supercharger are more for like certain cars, but i don't think it would go with an isf i believe , i think because my cousins has a supercharger in his hummer and its loudddd!!

Why? Especially in a Hummer..H2 and H3 or SUVs in general are not sport cars..
Maybe Exception of Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S and Range Rover Sport SC..

I think Supercharger would be quite nice on a IS-F although it remains to be seen whether on which 1 of 2 would be better..

I can't wait..It's killing me..It feels like I'm a little kid waiting on a video game to come out..

I'm the same way! I would like to see if one or both are going to come out for the F :) I honestly wouldn't mind either. If the supercharger is done to go with the F's luxury, I would hop on it right away. If there was a twin turbo set as well, I'm going to have to consider both very seriously :) I'm ready for SEMA and the aftermarket to load up on parts for the F
probably alot of companies are working on a lot of accessories for this car, its like rare for a car like this to not have anything yet, because like the BMW M3 came out the newest one and theres so many mods and stuff for it already
Have money, will travel. If the money is there, companies will pursue it. I think that you will see more products out for the F, but after the economy turns back around so R & D will be justified.

Be patient, my friend..It's like Day and Night..It'll happen at least hopefully..Just be ready to open your wallet b/c it's gonna lose some weight..:D

Good question, someone with an engineering background might be able to answer. I suspect it has something to do with size? Wouldn't a turbo add-on be smaller? Although with all the extra piping and intercooler, maybe not.

Porsche also uses the boxer type engine with horizontally opposed cylinders, perhaps that has something to do with it.

I'm being patient, just ready for the market to open up and have some options :)
Definetely me tooo!
I was wondering how long it would take to get a thread like this going haha.
There are so many variables the factor it to "better."

Better for feeling fast----Turbo (more change in power per RPM) whereas an SC will be linear, and a screw or egg beater type will give great benefits down low.

Better for maintenance---Toss up, depends on boost and tune.
Both solutions have bearings that will wear and need rebuilding periodically. Since the SC has a more characterized duty cycle (ties to rpm) the runaway forces will not stress the system as much. Both generate heat, (thermo PV=nRT) but since the turbo has an extra efficiency loss running off the high temp exhasut gasses, it will require more from its bearings.

Naturally my opinion for the F would be a roots or screw type blower......then a twin turbo setup :)

I have just never been a fan of how turbos fial and what they take out with them. You get a bad wastegate spring or boost controller or blow off valve and you can cause some damage. Also that steep change in HP when the turbo spools has never sat well with me thinking about what the piston experiences. The reliability of a system is the sum of its parts, and turbos will require more redundancy and gaurd bands than an SC, but it will always feel faster because you feel the power kick in more.

This is one of the age old arguments and I think it boils down to personal preference. With a turbo you can build you engine 700HP, drive at 400 all day long and kick it up when someone challenges you. On an SC, you just build to where you want to be. Easier to tune, not as many corner cases etc.

The V8 lend sitself to SC, due to the intake mani being in one column. You get to group all of the intakes in one shot.

With the improvements in turbo technology (see BMW twin turbo, Porsche variable turbine geometry etc.) turbo lag and temp issues have been virtually eliminated.

I have also noticed that larger displacement engines seem to go with a supercharger set up i.e. ZR1, CTS-V....6 cyl cars go turbo 911, new skyline, bmw 335i, etc. (with a few exceptions).

I think it also comes down to fitment and location issues. Looking at the Yamaha 2UR-GSE engine, I don't see much room for a turbo or supercharger and I think adjusting the engine management and changing the electric motor-controlled intake and hydraulically adjusted exhaust valve timing seems a tall order for tuners:confused:

Maybe Porsche has worked out the temp issues, but BMW still has some work to do in that department.

Agreed, there isn't a lot of room. Might need to put a large bump in the hood for the supercharger, or maybe just cut a hole and open it up to the outside for all to see and hear... :)

Or call JEGS and switch to a cowell induction hood and put a "drive it like you stole it" bumper sticker on your car!

What?:( I hope not..Awgh! TRD PLEASE DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING!
