My own intake testing.

So, inspired by Fig's recent dyno testing of the stock airbox, afe and injen intakes, I am going to do strictly real world testing of my k&n and stock intakes. This might take a week or more, because I do not drive my car all that much. Here is what I plan to do for each intake test;

1. Reset ECU.
2. Drive in a normal manner until engine is at full temperature.
3. Fill gas tank full, without squeezing.
4. Drive to my designated location.
5. Calibrate accelerometer (Dynolicious).
6. Perform multiple pulls from 1600rpm in 2nd gear to 6600rpm in 3rd gear.
7. Perform multiple 1/4 mile tests.
8. Drive for a minimum of 500km as I normally would do.
9. Fill gas tank full, without squeezing.
10. Return to designated location.
11. Calibrate accelerometer (Dynolicious).
12. Repeat tests in the same manner as before.

I will do this for each intake. I will try my very hardest to do it when the weather conditions are as close as possible. Also, aside from starting the g-force pulls in manual 2nd gear, I will switch it to auto before 3rd, and leave it in auto for the 1/4 mile tests, as to take out and changes that could result from me shifting.

I will post updates as I get them, and by the end there will be nice little graphs, because Dynolicious is just that damn cool. :)

I should post this: My F has a Odyssey PC680 Battery, K&N Intake, JoeZ Exhaust, F-Sport Rear Sway bar, No Spare Tire, and nothing inside except Me, The Key and an iPod Touch.

Tested K&N Intake fresh off ECU reset. I did 4 pulls from a roll, although I changed the method to 2000rpm first gear to 6600rpm in 3rd gear. I also did 3 1/4 mile tests. All were in the same ballpark, all in automatic with sport mode. No launch on the 1/4 mile, right foot brake straight to gas.

Averages are as follows;

1st gear 2000rpm to 3rd gear 6600rpm - 0.6425g max
1/4 mile max g - 0.67
1/4 mile time - 13.82
0-60 - 5.567sec

The times are not good by any means, and I myself have got way better times with dynolicious. (4.5sec 0-60 and sub 13sec 1/4 mile) But these times were extremely consistent (difference of .06 0-60 and .07 1/4), and all tests were run in a matter of 8 minutes.

Car had a full tank of gas, no spare, and has a lightweight battery. Temperature was 17C, wind speed below 20kph. (All runs done crosswind)

I will test again in 500km or so.

Good info. Did you do any horsepower readings with dynolicious?
Thanks for doing this man! Going to be interesting to see what you find although I have a feeling you're going to notice no gains at all with the K&N. Do you have any plans to pick up the Takeda or Injen?

No I will not be doing horsepower readings. I don't know the weight of my car with a full tank, and Dynolicious is usually pretty far off on the horsepower. The one time I did try the horsepower it said I had 303whp..... I'm only 2200ft above sea level, not 12000ft.

Mike I wouldn't be surprised either but since Formula 1 is on a 3 week break I have nothing to do on the weekends haha. So it's time to find out by seat of the pants. Also, no plans to pick up any other intakes. That is a whole lot of mileage I do not want to put on lol. Even what I'm going to do already makes me unhappy. :p

Haha, I completely understand man, just figured I would ask! Thanks again for doing this, can't wait to see the results
13.82??? Stock you should easily be at 12.5........???? Something's wrong for sure.

Actually, I shouldn't be anywhere. If you read the posts, I was in automatic, I did not launch the car, and it had a full tank of gas. Also note that I am NOT as sea level. Also note that I said I have had sub 13 second runs. 12.97 I think it was, on a day where the pavement was around 5 degrees celcius. And finally note, that this is accelerometer testing, not a drag strip, so the drag times will most likely be a little off at best.

I am running consistent tests. Not one shot wonders.
12.5 easily seems a little ambitious no??
yah "easily" seems like a big swing for the fence. it takes practice. even if my 12.97 is accurate. corrected at sea level would make it 12.63x

the biggest problem is my 60 foot. but like i said, the pavement was around 5 degrees celcius when i tested last year.
Sounds like fun. I might have to do a few tests like this just to keep my mind on something.

I'll be following. Thanks for doing this. Great idea!
I agree, great idea. I play with my itouch on occasion and now you made me dust it off. Never got any real consistency with it though. Have fun and appreciate you taking the time to try this.

@bigmike, I have the Takeda on order and will replace my K&N, I might try and get the K&N to Takeda difference and add to the ops post for added info.

Sounds good Andy, let us know what you think once you get the Takeda :cool:
shit weather this weekend. so im probably not going to put on any km. maybe monday or tuesday, its supposed to be decent.

by the way, i was looking over my car in the garage. does anyone else's side skirts get raped by rocks? like f**k me i almost want to get rid of the car because of it..
Nice work. I think your numbers match with my gtech numbers. I tried to get back to the dyno today to verify numbers (taking advantage of another forum dyno day) but alas furniture shopping with the wife was the priority. Glad to see more scientific studies afoot.
well not much been doin here... rain rain and more rain. did 550km yesterday. but no days of 17 degrees in sight so i'm waiting. here are the graphs from the first test set. and yes i know one of the 1/4 miles did make it to the 1/4 mile, i had to brake, and i guestimated the 1/4 mile time from the 1/8 mile time.

Alright party people (sorry I have been listening to lots of electo house recently) I have completed round 2 of the intake testing. 560km after ecu reset. Same test conditions as before, except the temperature was 2 degrees celcius cooler. I think this is marginal and I wanted to get it done because we are supposed to have rain and much colder temperatures for the first half of the week, and I don't like to keep people waiting. So, here we go.... Same number of runs as before, 5 pulls, 3 1/4 mile tests.

Averages are as follows;

1st gear 2000rpm to 3rd gear 6600rpm - 0.666g max
1/4 mile max g - 0.673
1/4 mile time - 13.286
0-60 - 5.076sec

Quite interesting? I think so.... This time around the max G that I saw during a pull was 0.69g, compared to the max of 0.65g that I saw last test set. Definitely the biggest difference was in the 1/4 mile time and 0-60 time. Fastest this set was 5.01 0-60 with a 13.25 1/4 mile. Last set was 5.54 0-60 with a 13.78 1/4 mile.

Feedback?

Here are the graphs. The biggest thing I notice right away is the harder pull in second gear compared to the first test set. I'll let you look into the details, mention something you notice even if its a small detail.

Very interesting results. This is for the K&N intake? I'm wondering if the slight cooler ambient temp contributed to these results?...Darshana S...
