Mods & Upgrades Distasteful?

5063 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Nightspore68
Does anyone else find all the mods and upgrades done to IS Fs as distasteful as I do? Shiny wheels, shiny grills, suspension lowering (for looks! not performance!). I'm surprised I haven't seen photos of IS Fs with giant rear wings, but I haven't looked... I bet they're out there. Spinners, anyone?

Lexus made some pretty good design decisions. I love the fact that the car is subtle and only "car people" know what it is. I feel like I can leave it at the mall parking lot and it won't attract a bunch of gawkers or invite vandalism.

What's the motivation behind making one's car showy? I'm no psychologist, but I sense minor issues behind the persona that needs the extra attention.

But then again, maybe my partially English roots are squashing my sense of adventure.

What do you think???

oh i've seen a few. its not that the aero parts are ugly or gawdy. its more like, how they are used. example. the twin turbo blue isf, videos of it on youtube.....i am not a fan of the front end. the lip with the blue "L" and the stickers just do not look good. the rims also....poor choice.
Every car I've owned over the years I always left it bone stock when it comes to body kits etc..The F is good looking car without any body kits etc..
Performance mods are the only thing I went for/go for in any car in general since it's internal you can't see them..
Unless carbon fiber replacement that would match the color of the car without the silver affect..
Actually, upon reflection, I was a bit harsh. I admire performance mods and who am I to say someone's extra shiny car is gaudy? Maybe my car is dull. I do have misgivings about appearance "enhancements" - I think they tend to make the car uglier rather than nicer - but one man's opinion shouldn't and doesn't count for much.

Sometimes I think it's odd that there is such disparity about what constitutes good taste, but if there weren't such differences we'd live in a dull world.
That's right, to each his own style. Yet, I kept my look stock, except for the tints.
just look at your avatar, that musical instrument is Ugly... shouldnt it be kept its natural wood color? You get what Im trying to point out?

Point taken! Nice juxtaposition.
Well, I believe that everyone has their own personal ways of expressing what they like and what they don't, that what makes us all different, if we all liked and disliked all the same things, this world would be so boring.
I tend to like the Chip Foose philosophy. Make subtle changes that an enthusiast will notice and go wow, but the average person won't even notice at a glance.

However, I think people should modify their cars however it makes them happy, as long as the mods aren't unsafe.

^I agree with that philosophy. I have personally done some modifications to the car that make it pop just a little more. Nothing over the top but subtle, classy changes imo (I'm sure there are many that disagree). I personally love the way my F looks and can't imagine having it stock again. Every car I've owned in the past have had subtle modifications that keep the original flow of the car while making it stand out that much more :)

Chip Foose learned from the best, his dad, Sam. When I lived in Santa Barbara in the 70s, 80s and 90s I was a customer of Sam, a great guy and a customizer of mainly Ford Products of the 40s and 50s. He did some great works on my GTOs and Trans-Am of the day.

I agree with Nightspore68. The car is already unique and I don't understand why someone wants to modify the exterior. I'm embarassed by some of the stuff I see, but, it is their car.
Oh wait, I said something negative and in this day and age you might hurt someones feelings. Sorry. Don't kill yourself. It's just my .02 cents worth. No big deal. Move along folks. It's all over. Nothing to see here.

A cautionary tale

Hey, all you modifiers should think twice about your next "improvement" or you might wind up with a car like this poor Corvette!
