OK...I have to recant my last statement.

I just got off the phone with my brother that is a service manager for Acura. He said that it is (to his understanding) the law for any "Safety" recall work to be done by the dealer whenever possible. Safety recalls are mandatory for the dealerships to perform and there is no "opt out" option. It is a major liability for the manufacturer if you bring your car in for something and they don't perform the safety recall work and you drive away and get in an accident that is linked to what the recall could have fixedl. So if you go in for an oil change, or want just the floor mats, when they are checking for recall info on your car they have to fix it. Now if it is a "product update" recall then that is optional. I guess we'll have to see how it gets put out to us.

The dealer called me today at work and told me my IS-F had a safety recall. I asked them what was needed to be done and they said some pedal modification and the ECU upgrade which would stop the car if the brake and gas were pressed at the same time. I told them I would think about it and get back to them. I am not planning on getting back to them or bringing my car in for any service. We will see how they follow up with that. I wonder if they could upgrade my ECU to remove the top speed limiter??

This info might help out:

The Brake Override System operates when these
conditions are met:
1. The throttle opening is greater than 1/3
2. Vehicle speed is above 5 mph
3. Brakes are applied firmly

In order to activate the Brake
Override System, the accelerator pedal
must be pressed before the brake pedal.

Additional Details:
• During greater accelerator pedal application,
the Brake Override System activates with any
brake pedal pressure.
• Brake Override System activation is cancelled
when the brake pedal is released.
• When the Brake Override System is active at
part throttle, changes in the accelerator pedal
position may cancel activation.
• To allow the vehicle to start on a hill without
rolling backwards, the Brake Override System
will not activate if the brake is applied prior to
pressing the accelerator pedal.
• The Brake Override System is not active in
4WD vehicles while driving in low range.
• Note to Hybrid owners: The Lexus Hybrid
System achieves a result similar to the Brake
Override System by reducing power if the
brakes are applied while the accelerator pedal
is depressed.

My dealer re-iterated what Doug said above. I decided to go ahead and get the recall done just in case. I don't drive my car that hard so I don't think I will be affected much. I drive with my son in the car fairly frequently and his safety is the most important thing to me.

I completly agree with you about family's safety being first.

I'm just not sure if the ECU upgrade is necessary. Don't all cars released in the US have a requirement that even if the throttle is fully opened if the brake is applied (and I'm not talking lightly) the car would come to a stop? I know you would have to really mash on the brake, but come on now, if your gas pedal was stuck don't you think you would mash the brake? I think the problem is that people don't apply the brake hard or long enough.:confused:

Thanks Doug! It doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would be. It looks like launching the car is still possible, so are burn outs...maybe anyways.

What is your dealerships policy on Safety Recall's. Are they mandatory when a client brings in a car or is it optional?

While some dealers are adamant that the recall work must be performed if you bring your car in. Most dealers are doing something like this:

I appreciate your position and you are more than welcome to decline the recall. The next time you bring your vehicle in for service, we will ask that you sign a statement saying that you were informed and understand what Lexus is doing and that you have declined to have the procedure performed. Obviously because this is a Safety Recall, Lexus has asked us to determine why the remedy is being declined and to make sure guests are fully aware of the entire procedure. During your next visit please forgive us if we spend just a few minutes with you going over the process per Lexus’ request and answering any questions you may have, however there will be no pressure to have the recall performed. Please contact me if you have any additional questions in the meantime, otherwise I’ll make a note in your file regarding this subject.

I believe it's a proactive approach to the "pursuit of perfection," and to make the car as idiot proof as possible when it comes to floor mats, which tells me they care about their customers and wouldn't want any further lawsuits. I had mine done as well eventhough I had no problems with floor mats or sticking pedals. Better safe than sorry, I'd say.

I'm still on the fence whether I should do this or not, anyone else chime in if they've done it or not? I still have some time before I need to go in for maintenance.

I will NOT be doing this. The new pedal is, IMHO, ugly and totally unnecessary. The ECU change, again, IMHO, will change the character to my F. It will not get done to my car. My wife's ES, however, is another story. She is apprehensive about this whole business. She took out her mat when she heard about the issue. I explained why she didn't need to, but her apprehension got the best of her. The ECU change will not alter the feel of the car for her.

Still thinking but leaning towards not having it done. Reasons - the ugly castrated gas pedal and most of all the software update. I am concerned that the software change will affect performance. Don't need more nanny software to take proper judgement and thinking out of driving. I will sign up for the software update when its mandated on all F1 cars as well!

Recall

I had the service performed and wish I had not. The new pedal in my opinion is way too small and makes semi-aggressive as well as stop and go driving more difficult. I am all for saftey but this is a bit over the top.

I had the ECU reprogrammed and also had the pedal changed, the pedal is actually not as bad as I thought, and I don't drive too overaggressively anyways, so the ECU is moot to me.

I got a thank you as well, for performing the recall.

I just bought a F and had a pre-purchase inspection done at Sewell Lexus in Texas....they did the pedal recall and replaced the rear view mirror (i mentioned that TSB) while they had the car in for the inspection.

I left the service advisor a voicemail telling her not to do the pedal recall but she said they had already done it by the time she got my message?

Is it really that bad?? Now I'm worried I'm gonna hate it. I'm having the car shipped to me so I won't actually see it in person for a few days.

PS: can someone who hasn't had the recall done post a pic of the pedal and also someone who had it done post a pic so we can see exactly what the difference is??
