How does that On/Off button work for cars?

So now the most cars have the Start button to turn on the car.
What's the point if it haha?
And how does it work?
Like to you have to insert a key or something then push the button or..??
I'm just really cerious cuz im looking into buying a 2011 Lexus Isf soon
