Those numbers barely move (as does the fuel level needle) when I have a totally full tank. Down when things are low the needle and numbers move much quicker.
I think the #'s are pretty accurate overall. If you fill up and note the distance to empty it estimates, and then note your actual miles driven when you next fill up. I think they'll be pretty close.
I would suspect there is some padding where 0 is actually half a gallon of gas left or something. However, I'm not willing to test this hypothesis.
