I don't know about California law but in Texas as long as the plate is visible from the front of the car, it doesn't matter where it's placed. So you can legally have the plate behind the front windshield, you could have it mounted if you wanted or even duct taped to the roof, they don't care where it is so long as it's visible from the front. It doesn't necessarily have to be mounted on the front of the car in any way. I always thought it was interesting that this was the case but I'm not arguing :D I keep mine next to my set and every time I get pulled over, I throw it up in the windshield and don't get ticketed for it :cool:
