i was wondering since you can start the car with the key then once its on, you can walk away with the key. can someone without the key just walk into the car and just drive away?

i ask cause i start my car in the morning, and need to back it out of my garage thats in my backyard, then i need to let my dogs out of the gate then walk back to my car. For that 1 min. i am away from the car but it is started.

just wondering if the car is driveable without the key? or what would happen?

Yes it is, but once the engine is shut down, it wont start again without the key.

Lou is correct. The car can be driven with out key in it, but once it is turned off it will not re-start with out the key in it.
Wow, this is interesting! I always thought it would shut off if you kept the key out of the car for too long when the car was running. My previous car would shut off after a period of time without the key so I figured thats how this one was. Good to know though!
Dead horse, but here I go anyway. I was wondering this after about the 2nd month I had my car. I started it and got out, had a friend get in and dive away to see how long/far he could go before the engine shut off. Low and behold it never shut down, and he drove around for about 1/2 an hour enjoying my ride. I'm glad he's a good friend and I trust him completely with my car. The funny part is that he realized I was low on gas and stopped to re-fuel my car and wasn't able to restart it. It took a bit for me to get there with my key.

Trust me that won't happen again.
that's acutally a safety feature. you wouldnt want the car to shut down while traveling at 75mph.
this happened to me when i was driving mine i was going around the block and it kept flashing "no key detected" but i kept driving and it died on me so u cant get far i was only a block from home.

That's what I thought too... at least from what I was told by the salesman.

I don't know what car you were driving, but that's certainly not been my experience.

The IS-F, and in fact, any Lexus with the Smart Key, once the vehicle is on, you can take the key out, you can drive the car from Chicago to San Diego with no problems, except the No key detected light will be on.
