Of course we've got manual mode access even when car is in D, by downshifting, but what really are the differences between the 2. So far I'm learning that after downshifting while tranny is still in D, the car WILL downshift on its own if I floor it. It won't do this if I'm in true manual mode, it essentially holds the gear, regardless of flooring it. Is the car's inability to downshift on it's own the primary difference here?

All the above is true. The single largest difference between the modes is this: When in sport and only in sport the torque converter remains locked in gears 2-8. This is what prmotes the ISF's quickest shifting. Also when in sport mode the transmission will automatically down shift under hard braking.
So sport mode shifts are definitely quicker than auto shifts?
