Costly Maintenance?

Well I just dropped my Car in for the 10K service and I complained about my tires, which they are switching to the Michelin PS2 free of charge

. I also told them about the squeeky brakes and they said they'd look into it. I gotta a call back a day later saying the front brakes,pads,and rotors need to be changed for a total cost of $1275. Is it normal to have to replace my brakes at 10K miles and I have never taken it to a track; only daily driving to and from school. I want to know If any of you had to change them already or not?

Service adviser said this is normal!!!!!!!!!!!!

At 10k it should be covered under warranty, I would call Lexus Corporate and complain, see what they say, its Bs when you need rotors at 10k, brake pads at 10k is not unheard of...

It all depends on how you drive the vehicle. Remember, these are High Performance Brakes that even under "normal" driving will wear out faster than a "Regular" Non High Performance Brake System. Are your Rotors that bad that they can not cut them?

^^^^Not in 10K miles of STREET Driving. You would have to be a pretty bad driver to wear the pads and warp the rotors in 10K miles

You trying to tell me a $60k car needs rotors in 10k? trying to say its rotor cannot handle the beating? so are all porsche owners changing their rotors at 6-8k since their twin turbo porsche are higher performance than our F? Not trying to get 100k out of our rotors but 10k is a bit too absurd. Its one thing if we have the same rotors as a corolla.....

I agree those rotors should still be excellent condition. The pads being worn down are a bit more resonable but the rotors being shot is deffinetly a manufacturing problem unless you got them way too hot and never cooled them down properly in which case they will warp.

I'm not argueing that the Rotors should last longer than 10k, but everyone's opinion on "Normal" driving is diffrent, and each of us drive diffrently but still consider it "Normal".

I have 11k on my F and haven't experienced any braking problems (e.g. no squeaking or vibration). I haven't had it inspected by the dealer yet, so I don't know for sure the pad life.

I'm generally pretty easy on my brakes, so I may not be a normal case.

I have about 21K miles and just got the car services. The dealer said I still have about 3K miles left on my pads and tires.
I have taken the car to the track twice, i have driven it hard a few times on the street. About 10K of my miles is highway.
I think you might want to get a 2nd opinion.

Not trying to start an argument but SO WHAT IF ITS DRIVEN HARD? These rotors should hold up and not warp even if pushed super hard, dude, these are supposantly a $5000 brake set up, at least thats how much they want for it looking at the F Sport catalogue. These are not the Junk rotors you buy at Autozone or PepBoy for $29.99 plus tax. These are basically a super expensive Brembo set up... Pads at 10k, No problem, Rotors at 10k? I dont think so. Warranty Warranty Warranty

I'm at 17k on my 2009. I have no brake issues, (squealing, warping etc) and my factory Michelin PS2's are at 6/32" in the rear and 7/32" in the front. It's holding up pretty damn well.

My pads wore out quickly, too. Very quickly. The car only had 4200 miles on it when I had to replace the pads. Luckily the rotors were OK.
The car has been to a road course track once and I did use the brakes hard that day.
By comparison, my Boxster had been to the same road course several times and it had at least 15,000 miles on it before it needed pads. It also braked a lot harder than the Lexus (although it was a lot lighter, to be fair).
So I'm starting to think the factory pads, and perhaps rotors, have a design problem. I'm hopeful my new pads (ferodos) will last longer.
You might try to replace the pads yourself; it's pretty easy (see posts here for instruction if you need it). It cost me $220. I wonder if you can measure the rotors yourself to verify they really need replacement.

it could be that your brakes were not bedded in properly. one result of improper bedding in is increased wear because when you bed in a set of brakes, a nice thin film sticks to the rotor surface and increases brake performance. if this film is never there, it starts wearing the rotor surface immediately and everytime u apply the brakes it wipes off the temporary film from the last time u braked.

this could be why some people have tons of brake dust and some do not. this sunday i washed my car for the first time in 2 weeks and the brake dust was not what i would call absurd.

Lemme see here. You complain about the tires and squeaky brakes. Do you think they are going to give you new tires for free? Remember that sticker on the rear passenger window that said these hi performance tires may not last 15,000 miles? Do you think that they aren't going to try and sell you on new discs and pads even if you only need new pads? The service department exists to sell labor and parts and that's where the dealership makes the real money.

Carry it to a good mechanic and install the pad of your choice ,maybe ceramic if you don't like the dusting issue. Also have him turn the rotors ,it can be done ,they did mine . It sounds like stealership is trying to make a chunk of change off you.

Does anyone know given identical conditions whether the Michelin or Bridgestone tires will last longer? The PS2s have a higher (numerical) treadwear rating, but apparently you can't compare across brands.

There seems to be a consensus that the PS2s perform better

The PS2's have a higher treadwear rating, but longevity of a tire will depend on drive styles and habits. The PS2's are a very soft compound tire compared to the Bridgestones. I have this weird feeling the PS2's dont last as long as the RE050's.

That is what I was thinking too. I'm just thinking through what I want to do when my Bridgestones wear out. I've got a while to figure it out though.
