A/C Issue

I've been noticing an interesting "feature" of my F's air conditioning. Earlier in the year where outside temps were all over the map, if I had used my a/c in a couple of days, it would take a minute or two for the air to start coming out cool.

Yesterday, even though my air has been on every day, it took about 2 minutes for any cool air to start coming out of the vents. Even then it was only slightly cool. It probably took another 5 minutes or so before I got what I would consider "normal" cold air coming out.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm thinking I may need to take it into the dealer and have them check it out.

Jeff this might be a possible cause: Has it been more humid in St.louis recently? I know it has in Ohio. One of the jobs of an A/C unit is to remove moisture from the cabin air of the car. If it's more humid it may take a little longer to cool.
Just a thought.

Doug,

Yesterday it was only about 80 degrees, but the humidity was quite high.

I've never noticed this sort of thing with any of my other cars, so I wasn't sure if something was not working properly or if this was normal.

I would suggest using the recycled air feature on initial cool down (if you are not on auto select for the inside / outside air). When on recycle you are on the equivalent of "max A/C" as you may find on other cars. For initial it helps to reduce the moisture in the interior and once it has come down you can switch to fresh air to maintain the temp.

I typically leave my setting on auto control for fan/temp and auto select on the air intake so the car can decide what is best.

Yeah your A/C tends to work hard in more humid conditions. You probably have noticed the increased water condensation puddle under the car.

i think your system is a bit sluggish. maybe you can put a thermometer at vent and plot temperatures vs minutes to show your dealer. your dealer should have specs on how quickly your AC should cool.

i am in central california. the temperature reached 96 degrees today and even after the car sat outside for an hour, cool air came out within a minute.

Any idea of the humidity level there in Cali that day? The less humid the easier it is for the system cool.
