: Functional Quad Exhaust
TAndrews 05-03-2008, 05:57 PM I posted this on the performance/modification forum, but i thought I would let everyone know about it.
Spent some time yesterday with Dave Borla at Borla Performance Industries. We put my IS-F on a lift and talked about the design of the exhast. He is definitely going to be making it a FUNCTIONAL quad exhast. Those tips will no longer be for show. He understands that the stacked exhast is a trademark of the car, and the design will incorporate that.
we also talked about making 2 production versions of the exhaust. One will completly be a new exhaust system, removing the emissions control. The other will leave the emission control on and will just be replacing the muffler and pipes.
This is all just discussion right now. I've left my car with him for a couple of weeks so they can work on it. I'll keep everyone updated as i know more.

Good news. Can't wait for an update.....

TAndrews 05-18-2008, 03:51 AM So I finally picked up my car from Borla Performance Industries. Let me just say they did a fantastic job, unfortunately due to cost and warranty issues associated with removing those 'Quad Exahuast Tips' they were unable to do anything cosmetic to the car.
That being said the sound is AWESOME!!!!!! I was worried that it might sound 'ricey', however they really captured the essence of a large 5litre V8. I had a 450mile drive back to Arizona today, so I really got a chance to put the car through it's paces. What you really notice is the sound at the lower rpms. Before the car was really quite until it hit that magic 4000rpm mark, now you have a deep sounding exhaust just when it's idling. What's great to is it's not obnoxious like you hear on some cars, it's enough to get noticed, however it's not over the top.
When I got back to Scottsdale first thing I did was take it to the carwash. I'm not kidding there must have been about 7 different guys come up to me to ask me about my car, and without even saying anything they all commented on how badass it sounds.
Dave and the guys did a great job. I wasn't able to speak with them on friday, so I havn't gotten any dyno reports yet. As soon as I get them, I'll post them. In terms of performance I can't say I can really feel it, however when you increase the HP by 20 on a 420HP car, I don't think it's that easy to tell.
So, if you really want to add a little touch to your IS-F, and give it even more of a muscle car type feel I would definitely recommend getting this exhaust. Don't know pricing or time line for when it will be available, I will also post that info when I get it.
daplaya0226 05-19-2008, 03:45 PM i thought that all four exhausts worked already? Thats what i read somewhere. Am i wrong?
TAndrews 05-19-2008, 06:00 PM The stacked tips are purely for show, they are not connected to the exahust at all. Just stick your head under the rear of the car to see.
ISFChamp 05-19-2008, 08:25 PM The Quad tips let exhaust thru, but are not hooked up directly to the exhaust system. They function there as a way to move the air around the car in a way to keep it "safe" under "higher" speeds.
daplaya0226 05-19-2008, 09:28 PM oh! i could have sworn i saw a picture with there actually being exhausts in the tips.

Thanks for the report back.....Sounds like Borla did a great job.
What I'm not clear on is what they did........Can you give some insight into what was done/changed/modified etc etc and the eta on the kit/parts needed for this mod.....
Cheers and enjoy the new sound and few extra ponies....
Colin.
Msedanman 05-20-2008, 01:00 AM oh! i could have sworn i saw a picture with there actually being exhausts in the tips.
I';ve seen that too and it's exhaust from the system tips which are only a short distance back of the dress tips.

TAndrews 05-20-2008, 06:53 AM Borla essentially fabricated a custom exhaust for my IS-F. This will likely go into production sometime in the near future. Last time we spoke we discussed having a cat-less exhaust an a cat-back system.
The version on my is the cat-less, they essentially removed the catalytic converters, obviously by doing that it will increase the performance of the car. However I would not pass a smog check if I needed to get one.
The other version will be all components behind the catalytic converters, still well see some benefit, however not as much, but it is also street legal.
I still don't believe that those tips really serve a function, especially since there is only one exaust pipe pointing towards the top stacked tip. The lower stacked tip has nothing pointing out towards it from the muffler. Lots of cars have things for esthetics only, and I'm cool with that, however I would have really like to get thoses things attached to the exhaust system.
Maybe this still might happen, I'm hoping I will continue to work with them to improve this product, and I see this as an area to improve on.
Bakasan 05-20-2008, 05:09 PM Hey TAndrews, can you post a video so we can check the sound.
Thanks.
i think from March he could take a video 100 of times ) may be he doesnt have one! ))
TAndrews 05-20-2008, 11:12 PM I can see about posting a video, however without having really great sound recording equipment and a stock IS-F to compare to in the video I'm not that sure it will do it much justice. I'll check into it and post back.

On my IS-F there are 4 tips directly in front of 4 muffler exits ....
It wouldn't take much work to actually connect those exits to the tips.
Don't know if ours in Canada are different from yours in the US....
TNX for the details, TAndrews.....I await patiently for that Borla system.
Colin
TAndrews 05-21-2008, 01:11 AM Maybe I miss spoke. There are pieces sticking out towards the 'Tips' however they are grossly smaller than the tips and there is a large gap between where they end and the tips begin.
Still not buying that those tips are there for "safety" reasons at higher speeds. It's ok for a car to have non-functioning pieces, no need to justify it, it just is what it is. Still I would have like to get them attached to the actual exhaust. I heard from Dave Borla today, and maybe in the future he might be able to fabricate something, it was just too tight a space and the fabrication would have had to be totally custom. Obviously costs involved are a lot in doing that, especially for a low production car like the IS-F. They would have to significantly increase cost per unit to justify it, which would price the exhaust out of range for a lot of people.
They did an awesome job, what sucks is I love the sound so much that I'm getting about 8mpg because I keep those rpms high all the time...
jt5585 06-21-2008, 04:52 PM Did some research as well as several conversations with both dealer and engineering friends. The dealer advised me that the design is not only for show but infact the tips act as a diffuser to help cool the exaust gasses and prevent lift at high speeds. The smart guys verified that it is viable. On a side note being former law enforcement I know ford played around with someting similar on the crown vic's to help keep the car stable at high speeds.

So, according to some of the AutoSpies members, you are almost sold on the IS-F but are too embarrassed to drive it on the street because of the exhaust tips being disconnected from the outlets of the true exhaust pipes. Let's take a look at some of the other cars that you might also be too embarassed to be seen in.

ISFChamp 06-21-2008, 06:22 PM I've been saying that about the tips since day one !!!!
old$parts 06-21-2008, 06:30 PM ANOTHER QUOTE..The quad pipes are there for a reason. The actual exhaust is recessed from the body and the quad pipes are diffusers. At high speeds (150mph+) the undercarriage windspeeds +exhaust created lift on the rear. Rather than design a larger spoiler and create more resistance, the quad pipe design diffuses the exhaust and eliminates lift. The original design stacked the pipes. The design was then changed to eliminate any rear lift at high speeds. Cool stuff I must say....from rd66
old$parts 06-21-2008, 06:46 PM And lastly my favorite quote and reply to those who are skeptical!
Supporting Systems
A true high-performance engine relies on outstanding support systems and thoughtful engineering that touches every detail. The Lexus IS F's unique stacked quad diffusers, for example, make more than a visual statement. They play an important role in a high-performance exhaust system by reducing backpressure. The stainless steel exhaust system starts with tubular exhaust manifolds and integrated catalysts. Next come dual 2.4-inch diameter front pipes that are joined before a pre-muffler and 2.7-inch single center pipe, after which the system splits into two 2.1-inch pipes and enters dual 16.8-liter mufflers.

Sounds like there's method in that madness.....:D
.......and reason not to mess with it, albeit for ultra high speeds...;)

jt5585 06-22-2008, 03:45 PM I am by no means affraid to be seen in or drive this car. I was simply just sharing some information that i had found out after reading all of the negative comments being said about the exaust. I have spent enough time at high speeds 120 plus on roads to appreciate the advantages of not having lift.
DEVILDOG 07-05-2008, 05:18 PM I'll take a Borla catback system as long as it does NOT connect to the quad tip diffusers. Please keep us informed on when this will be available. I'm ready to purchase. Thanks.

I too will not mess with it and will not connect any new exhaust to the diffusers.
Whomever makes an aftermarket exhaust for this car would be wise to take note.
I've had more good comments than bad on the exhaust but besides that, I like it the way it is.....

jtorres 09-13-2008, 01:51 AM Is there any way to post some pictures of that exaust for us to look at
If anyone is interested they should check out this site..They do exhaust on Lexus's but mainly on F..
Check this out..

Now no more wise cracks from assh**es who are intimated by this car..
I might consider doing this with the combo package they're offering..Only one thing standing in the way: TRD Supercharger!!
jctheplaya888 09-14-2008, 03:34 PM That is sick, i would be interested in the actual exhaust being customed to the quad exhaust, it would keep the isf look better
Msedanman 09-14-2008, 05:56 PM I'll go for the intake only. Seems to add the most power for the $$$$.
The exhaust gains just wouldn't be worth it to me.
I'm expecting to hear from SRT this week with details on pricing, shipping, and availability (in Canada).
C.
Msedanman 09-16-2008, 01:03 AM In the writeup on the High flow intake at SRT, it states:
It also includes the SRT AAFC that recalibrates the air/fuel ratio at all RPM ranges (at 350 points) and for every load situation for optimal performance and enhanced fuel economy.
Does this mod involve a reprogram of the ECU, and if so, is this done at SRT with the removed ECU, or is a reprogram sent from them to modify one's own ECU.
Or is it a chip that's piggybacked to the ECU?
I'm seriously considering ordering soon.

jtorres 09-17-2008, 04:45 AM can you post some pictures of that Borla exaust so we can take a look at it ,hook us up with those pics

I'm not sure borla has released the exhaust for the F yet. SRT (Swift Racing Technologies) has released theres and it can be found at the link below. If borla has released theres then its the first i've heard about it, who knows, maybe they have and I'm already behind

Is this SRT coming the same SRT that comes up with the turbo charged for example Jeep SRT8, Dodge Viper SRT10 etc...?
SuperFreak 09-17-2008, 04:03 PM TAndrews: Have you travelled 130+ MPH in your F before the install? If you have, what is your impression of the stability of the car with the new exhaust at those speeds? I have done these speeeds on a track and the car felt great. I am wondering if the rear will get a bit light with the exhaust dumping right it.
BigMikeISF 09-17-2008, 04:38 PM Is this SRT coming the same SRT that comes up with the turbo charged for example Jeep SRT8, Dodge Viper SRT10 etc...?
I do not believe so. The vehicles such as the Challenger, Charger, Jeep and Viper (just to name a few) that come with the SRT8 badge stand for (I believe) "Street Racing Technologies" followed by the 8 for a V8.
The company link I posted above is Swift Racing Technologies, I do not think they have any affiliation with any major car brands but they do offer tons of aftermarket stuff and as of right now, I believe they are the only ones that offer an aftermarket exhaust system for the F (someone please fill me in if this is incorrect :) )
